Facing the Mountain Zen Group
Facing the Mountain is a Sōtō Zen Buddhist community in Reno. We practice zazen, study the Buddhist teachings and precepts, and train together in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.
We meet for practice every Tuesday evening. Beginner’s Night is held on the first Monday of each month.
Our practice
Our practice centers on zazen—seated meditation—and extends into the ordinary activities of life together.
Tuesday evenings include zazen, walking meditation, chanting, and a dharma talk or discussion. Throughout the year we also hold ceremonies, study groups, sewing practice, day sittings, and residential retreats.
Beginner’s Night offers a quieter introduction to meditation, the forms we use, and the life of the sangha.
Upcoming at Facing the Mountain
Weekly practice, introductory programs, study, ceremonies, and retreats are listed on our public calendar.

A floating zendo
Facing the Mountain does not own or maintain a permanent temple building. Since 2014, however, our Tuesday zazenkai has met at Dharmakaya in Reno. It is our regular weekly home, although the space is shared and we set up our zendo anew each week.
We also gather elsewhere for study, ceremonies, sewing practice, day sittings, and retreats in the mountains and at Lake Tahoe. Wherever we meet, we arrange the altar, set out the cushions, sit down together, and make a zendo for that time and place.
Between meetings, our online community carries announcements, study discussions, practice questions, and the practical work of caring for the sangha.
The zendo is not only a building. It is the practice we keep together.
Our teachers and lineage
Facing the Mountain practices in the Sōtō Zen tradition. Our founding teacher is Rev. Shinzan Alice Tulloch, and our practice comes through the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and the communities of Berkeley Zen Center and San Francisco Zen Center.
Our priests and practice leaders support meditation instruction, ceremonies, study, retreats, and individual practice discussion.
